PTSD is a condition that can develop after a person goes through or sees a life-threatening event. Characterized as the lasting fear, anxiety, and psychological effects from interpersonal trauma (violence, neglect, and abuse), traumatic childhood events, sexual violation, and exposure to combat situations. Typical Symptoms of PTSD

  • Intrusive reminders of the trauma – Individuals who suffer PTSD may continually be reminded of their traumatic memory through nightmares, flashbacks, thoughts, and images.
  • Negative emotions – Individuals may experience fear, anxiety, guilt, and anger.
  • Irritability and anger
  • Poor sleep – symptoms of PTSD can make it difficult to sleep due to anxiety, nightmares, and hyper-vigilance.
  • Avoidance of places, objects, or people that are reminders of the traumatic event.
  • Avoidance of thoughts or feelings related to the trauma.
  • Difficulty trusting others
  • Easily startled or on “edge”
  • Impairment symptoms may make it difficult to work effectively, socialize with others, or cause disruptions which prevent the individual from moving forward with their goals.

Types of Trauma We Treat

  • Sexual trauma – Some form of sexual violation (without consent), such as assault, rape, or abuse. Traumatic sexual events can create lasting fear, anxiety, and lead to other psychological disorders.
  • Childhood trauma – Interpersonal trauma (violence, neglect, and abuse) and traumatic childhood events can create lasting psychological effects.
  • Military combat trauma – Veterans of combat situations often witness battlefield traumas that can have mental health consequences that can benefit from therapy programs.
  • Natural disasters or accidents trauma – Witnessing or directly experiencing a natural disaster or accident in which your or others’ lives were at risk can also lead to symptoms of PTSD.

PTSD is Treatable

Treatment for PTSD can help an individual gain skills to manage their symptoms more effectively as well as resolve any unhelpful beliefs or guilt related to the trauma. Dr. Feinberg has extensive training and experience providing evidence-based treatments for PTSD.

There are a number of evidence-based treatments which have been found to lead to a reduction in a person’s PTSD symptoms, anxiety, and depression. Cognitive Processing Therapy (CPT) and Prolonged Exposure Therapy (PE) are the current gold-standard treatments for PTSD.
